Shabby but friendly
You do get what you pay for. My friend and I were on a budget and this hotel suited our needs. Reception: the people were friendly and the lobby has free wifi (always a plus). Lobby is small but has a few comfy seats and a TV in the corner. Room: our room was somewhat shabby, with one bright blue wall and an orange surf-themed decal on the wall as decoration. The TV looked new but hadn't been set up - not that it mattered as we were barely there. Bathroom: essentially clean and up-to-date, although the loo appeared to be slightly leaky and some of the tiles were a bit cracked. Location: about four minutes' walk from Gare du Nord, so very easy for Eurostar travellers. Also very close to Barbés Rochechouart, ten minutes from Sacré Coeur and with good connections to the heart of the city. The main disadvantage was the fact that the area round there isn't so friendly & I'd suggest to travellers to keep their senses alert, simply as a security measure. The hotel is in the 10th arrondissement, nearly the 18th; I've lived in the 4th which you really can't beat for friendly and unintimidating. On the whole, it was perfectly ok, but I don't think I'd stay there again.
The best thing about my stay was...The proximity to good public transport connections

The hotel is old and the rooms are small, but clean!

Booking messed up
Alan Miles, Newcastle
They had booked me in for November instead of October (their fault not mine) so they took me to another hotel-same type but ended up with a smoking room which I didn't want. Hotel staff were apologetic and personally took me to other hotel near by. Lots of men around at night in the area trying to sell things which made me feel a bit uncomfortable, a few gangs hanging round the metro too. Close to metro stations so that was a bonus.
The best thing about my stay was...Close to metro station with easy access to city centre attractions and Roissy Airport Bus

2 nights stay b and b.
andrew proctor, nottingham
rooms very old decoration and furniture, dirty, shower fittings broken, wardrobes broken, carpets filthy, very noisy rooms can hear next door etc, had to swap room after first night has they put us in family foom which they needed back, then moved our cases to new room and left it unlocked all day, staff ok tho. all in all very depressing atmosphere in hotel.
The best thing about my stay was...my partner and the eifel tower.

Convenient position for Gare du Nord, its a bit rundown but has had some improvements which are mainly evident in the entrance area. When you go to your room you then get a true picture of the run down state of the building and rooms, worn carpets.flaking plaster on walls and ceiling and a general impression of a poor hostel. On entering the rooms you will find very cramped conditions and the same worn out feel from the corridors and stairs. Our party of 6 went out and had a great night in Paris but on our return 2 of us found our room was next door to a disco and it was impossible to sleep so we had to sleep in the room of 2 others in the party. The more serious complaint was one member of the party woke up on the first morning to find she was covered in bites(bed bugs). The management were told but had no available rooms to offer as a replacement.
The best thing about my stay was...The breakfast

booked for 1 night stay while waiting for eurostar home, read some of the reviews and thought it would be ok for 1 night. big mistake, upon entering you could see how bad it was, dirty. went up to room and as soon as we opened door there was a large brown stain on carpet, which had not been hoovered in weeks. windows would not close properly large hole in bathroom wall. the grottiest hotel ever, upgrade if you can. we didnt spend the night we found another hotel across from the station which was really nice. the outside of the altona hotel is the nicest thing about it. needs a major facelift and a good cleaner.
The best thing about my stay was...finding a nice clean hotel across from gare du nord

Review of Altona Hotel
Martin Ramsden, Sheffield,United Kingdom
This is a no frills hotel suitable for anyone wanting a fairly cheap stay in Paris.Basic but comfortable rooms, adequate breakfast and a decent location for travelling around.Don't believe the the bit about sound-proof rooms, this is one of the noisiest hotels I've stayed in(but it did seem to be full of school parties,so perhaps we were unlucky!)If you can afford to go more up-market I'd do it.

Ideal for cheap cuty break
Ian Day, South England
We were booked into the Altona but were actually taken to a different ten minutes walk away which was actually a much nicer area and we had a lovely little balcony. The Sltona when we arrived was surrounded by noisy groups and people were leaning out of various rooms and shouting to each other so yes you get what you pay for but im very glad we were moved. Location is perfect for the Metro which at £1.50 a trip is the perfect way of getting about.

Our stay was from 04/15/09-04/22/09 accommodations were adequate and fair for price paid. breakfast was fine, croissants and bread was fresh. if you are pinching pennies to go on vacation this would be the place to go. It is centrally located near the rail stations. However, if you can afford to upscale, you should do so. It pays to look around. The people who run the hotel are very accommodating and helpful. My husband had the unfortunate experience of being pickpocketed on our last day. The Manager of our hotel was very helpful in getting online to get the necessary phone numbers to cancel our credit cards. Helpful hint; make sure your money is secured while traveling in Paris.

worth the money
jackie n jordan, ayrshire
we enjoyed our stay at the altona, it was worth the money and very easy to find. breakfast as simple but enough to get you going in the morning. the twins were very helpfull and nice. our room was cleaned and hoovered every morning an fresh towels, the room was comfortable. hotel is very close to the metro station which has access to most of the tourist attractions. bad points when we arrived, we were given a room with 2 single beds when we had requested a double, but the guys gave us a new room straight away. when we got into out new room, the balcony windows did not lock and kept blowing open but we solved that by putting a chair against them and the lights keps flashing on and off and the only socket was in the bathroom!

1st visit staying in a parisian hotel.
Theresa Kearns, Ireland
Stayed at the Altona from the 19th to 22nd February 2009. Staff very friendly, breakfast basic as stated in other reviews. The location was perfect for using the metro, but lots of gangs hanging around trying to sell cigarettes to tourists, on steps into station, may be intimaditing for some. 10 mins walk up the street is the Moulin Rouge which seems to be in the red light district and may not be a desirable area if bringing young family. I don't know how the hotel got a 2 star rating as we had a room on the 4th floor and lots of plaster missing off the ceiling in hallway, also in bathroom paint peeling off the ceiling. The hotel should be one star at the least. I know you get what you pay for, but if visiting Paris again I would not stay in this hotel or area.

can't be beaten for value for money!
Hotel was perfect. All we wanted was a clean place to get a good nights sleep with a decent bathroom. We are used to crashing in hostels and this was the same price (or even less) and definitely much better! The reception staff were friendly and helpful, letting us leave our bags at reception so we could go to town before and after our check in. Room was fine, comfy bed and clean. Bathroom looked quite new and was cleaned daily with fresh towels. The breakfast in the morning was simple but enough to start the day off. The location was perfect...5 minutes from gare du nord and only 2 minutes from barbes rochechouart metro station which leads straight to the city centre. It was not the most desirable area of town but the local people were freindly and we felt safe travelling to and from the hotel late at night. Overall excellent value for money.

It was clean and very simple. The area surrounding the hotel was not nice at night, it was very off putting with gangs hanging around near the metro station. It's location was good for the price as we got a train straight from Charles de Gaulle to the hotel. And all tourist landmarks were easily accessible. It was an ok hotel as long as you were only using it as a base.

Great location, nice hotel
Tom Beharrell, Sheffield, UK
Basic like most of the <60GBP per night hotels I've stayed at in Paris, but very clean and friendly, best location for Gare du Nord/Eurostar, very close to a Metro station. Arrived late first night, which I'd specified on the order, but they'd let out our room to someone off the street anyway! Ended up at anotherHotel round the corner which was dirty and smelly, got back to the Altona the next day for the rest of the trip and it felt like the Ritz!

Simple..you get what you pay for... Breakfast...croissant, tea, coffee, juice, jam (don't expect for anything more). Room...clean, comfy, very basic, don't expect beautiful curtains, nor colour coordinations etc... Bathroom...very nice and clean, as its newly renovated.. Hotel location...brilliant!!! close to metro and CDG. May possibly come back to this hotel, but may try another hotel too.

The staff were friendly and helpful, spoke a fair amount of English and couldn't do enough to help. The room was clean and the bed made every day. The bathroom was basic but fine. Fresh towels every day too. Breakfast was simple, but they do a damn good hot chocolate! Hotel was in a very good position, right by Gare du Nord - great links to CDG airport and a crossing of many of the metro-lines, making it easy to get almost anywhere. Overall: clean and reasonably priced.

Clean,comfortable & central
Lisa Dronfield, Manchester
Good value for money!! This hotel was 3 min walk from Gard du Nord metro station where you can access all Paris main attractions from. There were lots of lovely places to eat and drink nearby. The room was basic but very clean & comfortable-bed linen and towels changed every day!! We had lots of hot water too!!! The hotel owners were friendly and made you feel welcome. Overall the Altona is a central, clean place to say if you are planning on sightseeing the beauties of Paris!

Bargain holiday and I'd recommend to a friend
Kerri Hutchinson, Galashiels, scotland
Ok so its not 5 star, but I travel a lot and it was great value for money. The room was clean, infact a cleaner came in every day and made our beds. The staff were friendly and helpful and spoke perfect english. The location is good because your near the main station, and the breakfast was a fresh crousant and bagette with jam and nutella with a hot drink or juice of your choice. For this price I don't think you could expect much more. I'd definately go again. I was on a trip with my university and some of my friends paid more for hostels than I did for this B&B so grab yourself a bargain! I've read other reviews and I agree that sometimes you only get cold water, but I think thats when everyone else has used it all, so perhaps avoid the busiest shower times. I was ok apart from once, but I only had to wait 20mins for it to warm up. Better than communal showers at a hostel though! And this place is nice enough to take the whole family.

Nice cheap basic hotel. Run by friendly spanish twins. Very good location, metro within few minutes, Montmartre and Louvre in walking distance, many nice little cafeterias and bakeries around. Room clean, plenty of hot water in the bathroom, clean towels every day, very comfortable bed. Would recommend to bring a kettle with u, i missed my regular evening cup of tea. Breakfast OK, but the same food every morning. Friendly and helpful staff. We would definitely come back.
