Apex Grassmarket Does It Again

Stayed here on a recent visit to attend the tattoo. We normally stay at the Apex City a couple of doors up but with no availability decided to stay here & just wow. Rooms, staff & food were up to the usual Apex standard however the view at breakfast is just to die for & this alone would sway me to book there again. Would also chuck in my swimsuit to use the pool as it's not everyday you get that in central Edinburgh. Well worth the money.

The best thing about my stay was...

Staff & location

Great Stay

The Apex hotel had clean and well maintained modern rooms. A fab location near to bars, restaurants and a few shops and the Royal mile. If you can stay in the front as we did, we had an lovely view of Edinburgh castle. I went swimming in the pool in the early hours which was clean and lit. The sauna not too hot and changing rooms and gym area all looks new and well maintained. All in all we would stay again.

The best thing about my stay was...

Swimming pool and views

Rugby weekend

Friendly staff, good facilities, breakfast was great and the room we were in had a fab view of Grassmarket and the castle. Minus side - a bit noisy throughout the nights although there were earplugs supplied. Would certainly recommend and would go back.

The best thing about my stay was...

After the rugby it has to be the view from room

Great location

This hotel was of a good standard, clean and rooms well maintained. Great location , bars , restaurants an lovely view of the castle. We chose this hotel due to location as we got married at the registry office which was minutes walk. My main issue was the fire alarms were activated at 4am, my husband and i (on our wedding night) left the hotel following the fire exit in to an empty dark carpark, we made our way to the street where i saw 2-3 apex staff with clip boards, at no point did anybody speak to us or direct us as to where to go or what was happening. We were outside in the cold for 1 hour before being allowed back in, it was the police who said we could go back in not the staff.. the alarm itself was no fault of the hotel but the chaos an lack of communication is a definate training issue..

Absolutely fantastic

We stayed here over the weekend (Thursday to Sunday). We requested a room on a high floor with a view of the castle and we got both. Our room was beautiful, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. Our room on the 5th floor had the most amazing view of the castle. We ate breakfast in the restaurant our first morning but had breakfast delivered to our room the other mornings which was great. We used the swimming pool a few times and the gym and sauna, they were small but it was a great bonus. The hotel is in a good location, especially for the castle or the Scotch Whiskey Experience. Its a stones throw from the Royal Mile and if you fancy doing any of the bus tours, one stops right outside the hotel. Was really a great base for us and we couldn't commend the hotel enough.

The best thing about my stay was...

Great facilities in the hotel

Comfortable hotel in the Heart of the City

Seven of us stayed for one night at this hotel. The rooms were lovely. Most had two double beds which were very comfortable. The en-suite was small but nicely decorate, with lovely toiletries. There was no mini-fridge in any of our rooms which made chilling the wine a bit tricky. The breakfast was great and the view of the castle from the 5th floor restaurant not to be missed. The hotel staff were friendly and efficient and they will store your luggage even after checkout. The Grassmarket is a beautiful area full of bars, restaurants and quirky shops. All the major attractions are within walking distance. We will definitely return to this hotel on our next trip.

Nice hotel.Great location

All staff were extremely friendly and professional. Room was nice although the bathroom did smell a little like it had been washed with a dirty cloth. We made use of the pool and gym. I did not like the fact that the pool was unattended and the changing rooms are communal. When i was in the changing room a man came in to assist his wife with their baby....very embarrassing.Likewise when my husband was in the male changing room a man brought in his daughter who was around six years old to get changed there. My husband was horrified. Also the lockers are so close to the entrance door of the changing rooms that you are taking the risk of getting your head bashed when you open or close the locker. There is a nintendo wii for use which looked like great fun, also you can use the internet.Great for kids..and adults! There are plenty of bars and restruants around and it is close the the castle and the royal mile. Overall this was an excellant hotel.

The best thing about my stay was...

Lovely staff. Great location.

Good Hotel

We stayed at this hotel in July 09 with our 13 year old son. We had a room to the front of the hotel and did not get much sleep on the Friday night - what a racket we have stayed in Mid Town Manhattan and it was'nt as noisy as this. Room was spacious and clean and the little extras like the robes jelly beans pringles and sparkling water were welcome the rubber duck in the bathroom was quaint!!. We had a spectacular view of the castle however we had to be moved to a rear facing room due to the noise - not a plush as the front facing room but very comfortable and we got a nights sleep which was most important!!. Staff were friendly courteous and very helpful. Thought the brekfast was very good (ours was included in the room rate)Would go back but not as a family - found the noise in Grassmarket a bit much, the licencing laws draconian (cant bring a child into a pub at any time) Dont think Edinburgh is a very suitable place for Kids with the Hens and Stags falling around drunk as early as 7pm - guys in drag and the drinks were in full swing at 11 am. Pity cause Edinburgh has a lot to offer

A noisy location on the Grassmarket, so take a room to the rear. Also no air conditioning anywhere and it was very hot and sticky over a lovely weekend. Be prepared for the hotel to attempt to move you into their sister hotel along the street (lower grade). Resist this and kick up a stink. We got a room upgrade and a free bottle of bubbly after really pushing back, good fun doing that though. Breakfast was just 'OK', you'd be better in one of the cafes across the streek. So all in 'JUST OK@'.

Birthday treat

Well placed right in the middle of town. The most spectacular view overlooking the castle from the restaurant. Staff went out of their way to be helpful and friendly and find us a parking space under the hotel. Room was comfortable, clean, stylish and quiet - because we had specified a quiet room at the back as other reviewers had noted front rooms were noisy due to late night leariness on the Grassmarket. Expensive but good as a treat.

Short City Break

I would highly recommend this hotel for anyone wishing to stay in a central location for all of Edinburgh's attractions. The staff at the hotel were all extremely helpful and friendly, while the hotel itself was very clean and warm. The hotel is situated in the Grassmarket area of Edinburgh which is full of bars and restaurants and is generally a hive of activity. The only problem with this is the rooms at the front of the hotel, while having spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle, are very noisy until 4 or 5am Friday and Saturday nights. For this reason, if you are planning on being in bed earlier than this, I would suggest requesting a room at the rear of the hotel. Having spent our first night (Friday) in a room at the front of the hotel, we requested to be moved on Saturday. The staff were very obliging and we were moved immediately without any hassle. I would highly recommend this hotel to travellers of all types. Centrally located with all the conviences you could wish for including a swimming pool and tropicarium.

Apex International - Fab Hotel :)

Hotel is in a great location, 2 double beds which meant 1 each :), robes and slippers all very swish! :D and of course the little duck in the bathroom. Although there was noise outside the hotel, this did not bother us. We had a great stay and would definitly go back.

Apex International Review

This hotel was as described in terms of features and facilities, however, we experienced a few problems. Our room faced out onto the castle, which also unfortunately means our room looked out onto the street. The noise in our room at night was completely unbelievable (and we were on the 4th floor). the noise from the people below was simply incredible. The windows cannot be double glazed (or if they are the glass is paper thin!!!) The next morning we headed up to the restaurant at about 09:30 to get breakfast (which we were told was served both upstairs in the restaurant with the additional choice of a buffet downstairs). Upon arriving at the restaurant we were very impolitely told "we aren't taking any more guests upstairs, you will need to go to the buffet if you want fed!!". Charming!! When we got to the buffet, the majority of the food was cold. The hotel location was great however, but the staff and glazier could do with a talking to!!!

Apex International - A great place to be !

I booked at the Apex International this year following my stay at the Apex City in 2006. I booked a twin room and on arrival I was up graded to a twin queen with a lovely view of the castle on the 2nd floor. As ever, the food is excelent and the service efficient and unassuming. Never be scared to chat with the staff who are very friendly and happy to chat once you make the initial move. The menu for the Heights & Metro is extensive, but if you can't find anything to your taste, (Unlikely) then pop a few doors down the road to the Apex City which is on a par with the Heights Restaurant. Breakfast is server in the Height Restaurant on the 5th Floor with great views of the castle. The breakfast menu is extensive ranging from a fully cooked breakfast to fresh breads, danish pastries, fresh fruit, smoked salmon or cheese. If you are having the the cooked breakfast them help yourself to the cold buffet too - A great opportunity to charge your cells for the day ahead. Housekeeping was spot on with the exception on the Sunday, where the room was not cleaned till 4.30 pm. However, anything like tea, coffee, biscuits, crisps & jelly beans were always replaced and the bathroom was spotless. The is quite a nice spa with swimming pool for those of you who have time to make use of this nice facility. The Grassmarket is a noisy area, especially around Festival time so ask for a rear room if this is a problem and note that this hotel, unlike the Apex City, does not have air conditioning. This hotel is in a great location, surrounded by lots of good eating establishments and small shops. The Royal Mile is best accessed via a very short walk into Victoria Street and up a small flight of steps. On NO ACCOUNT take the steps opposite the hotel unless you are very fit, or like me and my aged father on our first visit you will be in need of oxygen by the time you reach the top. To sum up, this is a great hotel in a lovely location just a short walk from the Royal Mile and full of people enjoying themselves - A great city holiday location.

Having visited this hotel nearly 3 years ago, I decided it was time to return to see if it was still as good. Well , it didn't disappoint - from the pleasantness and helpfulness of the staff to presentation of the food, from location of the hotel to the attention to detail. Everything was just perfect, highly recommended and well worth a visit. As in those famous words uttered by Arnie - 'I'll be back !'

I really enjoyed my stay at the Apex International. The staff were so friendly and went out of their way to help. The room was really nice, comfy bed, very powerful shower(the way I like it)and the hotel is situated smack bang in the middle of Grassmarket's liveliness.
