Channings Hotel Overview

The Channings Edinburgh Hotel is located off Queensferry road, approximatley a 10 minute stroll from Edinburgh’s centre. History would have it that the Antarctic explorer Sir Ernest Shackleton used to live in this property. Nowadays the exact location of his abode would be where the hotel’s library is found. Guest bedrooms are all individually decorated in striking and elegant combinations of textured fabrics, providing a comfortable and relaxing base for your stay. Rooms all include the modern amenities that one could expect from a hotel of its class, including en-suite bathroom and Internet access. The hotel has facilities for conferencing and banqueting, a professional restaurant team and a sophisticated wine bar. The Channings Hotel is the perfect choice for those seeking a little luxury in Edinburgh.

Nice hotel shame about the staff

6 in Total stayed over the Edinburgh Marathon weekend. Mixed views really. Hotel itself nice and rooms were a good standard. Food served was lovely but bar staff and breakfast staff really hard work. We spent alot of money in total at the hotel over the 3 rooms and I dont think we once got a smile. Asked for a drink to be changed and they refused so this side of things did disappoint us. We didn't let it ruin the weekend and front of house staff were very helpful.

The best thing about my stay was...

Quality of food

lovely hotel

Stayed for the weekend while visiting my daughter. Very good hotel, lovely room, very quiet. Staff very helpful and the breakfast was very good. Liked the Channings as it a bit of character about it

The best thing about my stay was...

Enjoyable

Warm welcome, room service punctual (said 20 mins and duly arrived) Food good and warm. Huge bathroom with freestanding bath and walk in shower. Television was a bit dated, but functional. As this is a green thinking hotel, you have to turn the TV off as it does not remain on stand by. Very quiet, good decor and good selection of fresh produce at breakfast.

The best thing about my stay was...

Peace & quiet - little traffic as you are situated away from the main road.

One night stay, saturday night bed/breakfast

The hotel is located off Queensferry street about 3/4 mile from Princess Street, the shopping centre of Edinburgh. Buses are available into the centre. At weekends there is free street parking to the front of the hotel. We had a lower ground floor double room which was immaculately presented with an ensuite consisting of shower cubicle. bidet, vanity unit wash basin and a large jacuzzi bath. The hotel breakfast was superb, the hotel furnishings and staff were terrific and I cannot find fault in any way. Highly recommended.

The best thing about my stay was...

Everything!

Beautiful hotel in a beautiful, quiet area of the city. Easy walk into city but also good shops and places to eat nearby. Hotel warm, cozy and discreet. Very welcoming and helpful staff. Breakfast choices good and quick service. Room smallish but well equipped and very comfortable. It was an absolute pleasure to stay there and Edinburgh NEVER disappoints!!!!

Fabulous weekend break

Great staff, great accommodations, great food. The 10 minute walk to the city centre, which I was told, was really more like 20 minutes unless you are a strong walker, or under 26 like my daughter, but it was nice to have that separation between the High Street and the hotel and the atmosphere more than makes up for it. Would stay there again.

weekend break

Booked a weekend at Channings as a weekend birthday treat for my wife. After a long drive and the Edinburgh rush hour we were both a bit tired and grumpy. Finally checked in and managed to get a parking space, but there was a problem with the heating (which made both of us even more grumpy). However, we phoned reception and went down for a drink at the hotel bar. Once down there, we began to settle in, we thought the bar was really nice and the staff were great. On the way back up the reception staff informed us that someone had looked at the heating, but when we got up it was still cold. Another phone call to reception and they provided a heater straight away. Next day breakfast was great, and staff were really friendly. By the end of the weekend we were both really relaxed and sad to leave the city. Although we had a few hiccups, we thought the hotel was one of the best we have stayed in and would recommend the chain. All the staff were very polite and helpful and the bar was pretty cheap! All in all a great weekend!!

Excellent!

I booked a room here for three nights as a surprise for my husband for our first anniversary and it was the perfect choice. The room was lovely, well presented and a good size. The same can be said for the bathroom. There was a good choice for breakfast, from full cooked to fruit and cereal. The staff were excellent, very professional and friendly. We will definitely be visiting Edinburgh again and Channings will be our first choice of accomodation.

EXCELLENT!!!!

We have just returned from a weekend at Channings. The staff were all excellent and friendly. Breakfast was lovely and more than enough to set you up for the day. We didn't eat in the restaurant but ordered food from room service, which was yummy and brilliant value. Also had a few drinks in the bar on Friday evening, very good atmosphere. It is a healthy walk into the centre but staff will happily order a taxi and never had to wait more than a few minutes. The room was fine and I will stay there the next time I go to Edinburgh.

CHANNINGS - Shame about Dinner

We stayed at Channings on Saturday 4 August 2007, whilst visiting Edinburgh for the Tattoo. It is located in a quiet area, about 20 minutes gentle stroll from Princes Street and about 3 minutes from the nearest bus stop, so very handy. The front desk staff and welcome was very pleasant and we were taken to our room by Scott, a local lad with good knowledge and very happy to help with directions etc. The room was not huge, but big enough for the 2 of us, the bathroom light and airy and stocked with Molton Brown toiletories which went down well. Lunch on the patio was superb and relaxed and the bar staff great, a good bit of banter and very efficient. Dinner was a different matter and the staff here let down the whole hotel, making our stay somewhat disappointing. The food was fine, if a little pretentious, but the staff gave the impression that we should have taken it as an honour to eat in THEIR establishment. A very disappointing and irritating experience. Breakfast was taken in the room ,after reading previous reviews where this was a major recommendation. It was not a culinary delight, although it was delivered by a smiling and pleasant waiter. the quality of what was served up did leave a lot to be desired, but maybe if we had a more pleasant dinner the evening before, we would have overlooked it. In all, I would say given the choice go to the Roxburghe instead. As for the dining room staff at Channings it's a shame that you let your colleagues down on Saturday night. Remember it's a four star hotel dining room not Michelin Star Restauant. People go to the hotel to stay for the evening and then eat in the dining room, eating here is not the reason for staying. Act accordingly !

Review of 'CHANNINGS'

We were greeted by friendly 'front of house' staff and shown to our rooms by an extremely friendly and knowledgable young man called Scott Scott proceeded to deliver our cases to our room and provide good information regarding the location of the hotel in relation to the city and also enquired about our intentions during our stay, providing useful advice including that of transport in the area as we chose to leave our car at the hotel during our stay. (incidentally, I double parked the car and left the keys at reception who arranged to park it while we were experiencing a taster of the city (car parked directly ouside the hotel when we returned.

All hotel staff very friendly, very good choice at breakfast, which fuelled you for the day. Bar very quite, but it was early March. Room was very good and had everything we needed, including free internet access - albeit a little fiddly. No adverse comments, try the hotel, you will enjoy it.

Review of 'CHANNINGS', Edinburgh

Arriving at the hotel for a two night stay to celebrate a good friends imminent wedding, we were welcomed by very smart and cuteous staff into this very stylish and beautifully presented hotel.

While some rooms are a little on the small side, the rooms seen were all very well presented and had great facilities. Wide screen LCD TV with free internet access will keep you in touch with world events and an iron and ironing board in every room was a nice touch for a last minute smarten up before hitting town.

Channings is located in the impressive victorian New-Town area and the views across the city are impressive.

All staff were extremely friendly and helpful, offering advice on where to go and where to avoid in town.

Overall, an excellent hotel with fantastic facilities, great staff and an impressive location - thoroughly recommended.
