Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the capital of the island of Tenerife. The beautiful port city features many attractions including the many squares such as the popular ‘La Plaza de Espana’, as well as the wonderful exotic landscapes parks and green spaces such as the exotic ‘Garcia Sanabria’ and the Teide National Park. For those seeking a little beach relaxation Santa Cruz’s’ privileged setting allows guests to enjoy the beautiful beaches such as Las Teresitas. During the month of February visitors may experience the infamous Santa Cruz Carnival, a month long vibrant celebration which is one of Spain’s most spectacular shows. Santa Cruz de Tenerife is the perfect destination for those seeking a city break on the island of Tenerife.

A fine city that is also the ideal base for exploring the rest of Tenerife

We found Santa Cruz to be a large, modern, safe and clean city. Our hotel (Silken Atlantida) was within easy walking distance of some of the city's main sights. Here are some of our favourites: the stunning Calatrava-designed Auditorio de Tenerife (the Opera House), the Municipal Market (of Our Lady of Africa), the impressive Herzog & de Meuron-designed Tenerife Espacio de las Artes (TEA) arts centre, and the elegant Plaza de Espana area. There were also 3 major retail complexes within easy walking distance of our hotel: The El Corte Ingles department store (across the road from the bus station), and the Meridiana and Nivaria shopping centres. So, if shopping is your thing, you're definitely in the right place. As our hotel was also about a 5-minute walk from the city's bus station, when we wanted to take a break from exploring the city, on two occasions we took the 25-minute bus trip (route 910) to the lovely Las Teresitas beach, which cost us €0.75 per person (one way) using the Bono card. As Santa Cruz is effectively the public transport hub of Tenerife, this makes transfers by public transport (on the TITSA bus line) from either Tenerife South (TFS, route 111 or 711) or North (TFN, route 102, 104, 107 or 108) airports is a doddle, taking about an hour. If you can, buy a Bono card (with either €15 or €25 credit on it). This will give you great discounts on bus fares. For instance, the fare from TFS to Santa Cruz costs about €6.70 with the Bono card compared to €9.50 with cash. In the case of TFS, where we arrived, you can now buy those cards in the blue Lycamobile kiosk in the arrivals hall, where the bus stops are just outside the door. As the island's public transport hub, this also makes this city an ideal base from which to explore the island by public transport. We found the TITSA bus service to be extremely good with modern vehicles that are operated punctually to the advertised schedules by courteous drivers and at reasonable cost (especially with the Bono card, which is for sale in all bus stations). We used TITSA busses to visit the following places: La Orotava (route 107 or 108), Puerto de la Cruz (route 101 or 102), Los Cristianos (route 110 or 111) and Playa de las Americas (route 110).

The best thing about my stay was ...

It's the public transport hub of Tenerife

Great town for shopping, Tapas & drinks

An interesting town with plenty of shops from high end boutiques to bargain basements, loads of restaurants, pavement cafes and tapas bars. Plenty of pleasant park areas, loads of history and old buildings. Great transport links to all parts of Tenerife.

The best thing about my stay was ...

shoe shops and tapas!

A very big town/city but not many restaurants.

A lovely place to visit. Nice people and nice bars to drink in. We found a lot of tapas bars but not many restaurants. The costs of the food in the tapas bars was dissapointing compared to Fuerteventura (where we live) but our favorite restaurant is only a few minutes walk from where we stayed. Favorite restaurant was Tenedor de la Noria
