Hotels in France

Romantic boutiques, chic hotels, spa retreats and family resorts can all be found dotted around France. Where you stay depends on just what sort of getaway you’re after.

With its luscious seafronts, romantic cities and world-famous theme parks, France has something to offer for all family members for every holiday. Visiting Disneyland Paris is a dream-come-true for many tourists, while other parts of the country offer up historic sights (Lourdes and Toulouse), quaint Christmas markets (Lille and Lyon), wine (Bordeaux) and striking fields of lavender (Provence). There’s even plenty of alpine villages over by the borders of Switzerland and Italy if you’re after a cosy winter break!

Where to stay

Disneyland

Character parades, exhilarating rides and Disney-themed restaurants: for many, Disneyland is the premium holiday destination in France, and as such will choose to stay in one of the many nearby resorts for easy access. Many of the resorts are based within Boulevard du Grand Fosse and range from budget stays to all-inclusive family resorts with on-site restaurants, spas and swimming pools.

Paris

One of the most romantic destinations in all of Europe, Paris has the accommodation to match. The city is divided up into 20 neighbourhoods, which each bring something different into the mix. Chic but pricey hotels make up much of the City Centre, and similarly, the historic and picturesque Montmartre area. Nevertheless, both areas will set you up with easy walking distance to all the main Parisian sights on your holiday. For an authentic, residential taste of the city, the Roquette area is the Shoreditch of Paris. Head here for cosy cafes and boutique hotels.

Nice

Nice is the city everybody flocks to for beautiful sunshine, beaches and classy nights out. The city centre has a number of high-end, luxury hotels, interspersed with inexpensive holiday apartments. Just 10km outside of Nice is the seaside village of Beaulieu-sur-Mer, which is often a little quieter and more affordable.

Cannes

A little further along the French Riviera is Cannes, which is best known for its annual international film festival. It’s a glitzy affair whenever you go though, with stylish apartments and beautiful buildings peppered around the city. The city, however, has accommodation to suit all budgets, from luxury five-star villas to more affordable cheap chain hotels.

What to see

France has so many things to see, you could quite easily return every year for the rest of your life and still have things on your list. At Disneyland Paris, the famous Sleeping Beauty castle is one of the most must-see spots, while for many the highlight will be seeing how many Disney characters they can bump into on their way around the park.

Elsewhere, Paris has famous sights in abundance, including the Eiffel Tower, the Louvre and Notre-Dame. And the Promenade des Anglais in Nice is a 4km sweep of palm tree-lined seafront which tourists will recognise from all the brochures.

Nightlife

The nightlife in France is as varied as the different types of resorts, proving there’s somewhere for just about anyone. For big kids, there are a number of bars within the Disney resort itself. Many of these are open until the early hours of the morning, with live entertainment and flowing drinks adding to the atmosphere.

Paris has a number of cheap and high-end bars, serving up classic cocktail favourites as well as a number of more unusual twists. The Bastille and Oberkampf districts are best for inexpensive tipples, and it’s where those looking for a party often end up.

What to eat

It’s not just the history and the sights that attract people to holiday in France year-on-year; it’s also the cuisine. Millions flock to the country for authentic food ranging from escargot (snails) to croque-monsieur (a grilled sandwich filled with ham and melted gruyère cheese). Those travelling to the French Riviera can enjoy the strong Mediterranean influence, mostly made up of delicious fresh seafood. Socca is a popular street food found in Nice and is simply a crusty chickpea pancake that’s good to eat on-the-go or as a mid-afternoon snack.

Shopping

Paris is one of the greatest shopping destinations in the world and caters for all budgets and shopping styles. For something a little different, head to the Marais quarter which overflows with antiques, gourmet food and jewelry. Bordeaux gives Paris’ shopping a run for its money though; at 1.2km long, the city’s famous Rue Sainte-Catherine is generally thought to be Europe’s longest pedestrian shopping street. Local French stores sit alongside large international brands.

Nice also offers a number of shopping experiences, from luxurious stores around the Golden Square to quirky boutiques in the Old Town. For shops somewhere in the middle, make the main Avenue Jean Médecin your first port-of-call. It’s the city’s main shopping area and features all your favourite brands.
