Lovely town, beautiful setting
Lourdes is best known of course for its religious shrine. The lower town, nearer to the grotto, has a huge number of hotels and shops selling religious souvenirs, along with lots of cafes etc. The upper town is the more commercial area, with a good selection of shops and eating places. Lourdes is the second-largest town in the Hautes-Pyrenees and is a centre for the surrounding area. There is a good market open in the mornings, with some open-air stalls also. The number of pilgrims has gone down in recent years and some of the smaller hotels especially are closed or up for sale, and some have been made into self-catering apartments instead. Lourdes is very handy as a base for visiting the Pyrenees: there is a regular bus service up to Cauterets and Bareges, and in summer direct buses up to Gavarnie and La Mongie. there are also pleasant walks in the lower hills around the town itself (plenty of info available from the Tourist Information Office). It is about 2 hours by either car or train from Toulouse, and about two hours from the coast at Bayonne / Biarritz.
The best thing about my stay was ...
Views over the mountains
