Hotels in Santorini
Arguably one of the most iconic of the Greek islands, Santorini looks just like it’s out of a movie. Due to its unusual shape and formation the accommodation will vary in quality and comfort depending on where they are based. From luxury hotels offering donkey rides to reach your destination, to cheaper aparthotels where it’s best to pack lightly, with quaint guest houses sprinkled in between, it is up to you to mould your Santorini holiday to best suit you and your budget.
Where to stay
The coastline of Santorini is famed for its jagged volcanic cliffs and the shoreline of Kamari is so breath taking and well-kept, it received Blue Flag status. With varying difficulties of access picking your hotel wisely however, once you’re there it will all be worth it. The nearby Perissa is a great hub for water sports to add some adventure to your holiday.
The capital of Santorini, Fira is one of the busiest parts of the island. Lots of bars and cafes have their patios and balconies packed with tourists admiring the views and enjoying the sunshine. The narrow, hilly streets will make for a picturesque walk and will leave you pleasantly out of breath.
Probably the most iconic part of Santorini, the image of Oia is the one most used to advertise the island. The white buildings with the blue rooftops, along with the never-ending stairs and canape filled patios set the perfect scene for your most picturesque holiday photos. While on the pricey side, this is the place to be if you really want the full movie style experience. The sunsets are absolutely unreal, people travel there especially to see this view.
What to see
Imerovigli, a village just north of Fira is the home of a beautiful historic church that houses the balcony to the Aegean’. This is the pot many tourists flock to, to experience the breath taking Greek sunset. Trust us, the hike through the amphitheatrically built village will be worth it.
When on holiday in Santorini, you simply must visit and open air cinema. Kamari village is the place to go with a beautiful outdoor setting and big screen showing some unforgettable classics. The most perfect place for a romantic evening or a bucket list experience for movie buffs.
For a spot of history go to the Santorini Archaeological Museum. With artefacts from ancient Thira plus items gathered around the island over the years including from Roman times. You’ll feel well cultured.
If you are looking for some serious partying during your holiday to Santorini, Fira is the main place to head on a night out. With dance clubs and bars alike, you’ll be able to get your party on in style. From stylish lounge bars to discos, there’s plenty of choice. Kamari and Perissa also have a vibrant nightlife with excellent cocktails and music.
What to eat
It would really be a shame not to try the sensational Greek food that Santorini has to offer. With lovely seafood restaurants serving fresh catch of the day, to gourmet fine dining and traditional tavernas all serving the best food. Cafes and bars will offer snacks and drinks and you can even book a wine tasting session. The best dishes to try are the tomatokefdes and sfougato and the frappe is an island speciality. .
Along the winding, narrow streets you’ll find loads of gift shops selling all the expected Greek souvenirs but you’ll be able to find some high quality, unique products as well. With galleries and boutiques selling carefully selected stock, you’ll be able to come back with a one-of-a-kind piece of jewellery or crafts. For more bling head to ‘Gold Street’ in Fira which is replete with jewellery shops. Oia also has some great boutiques where you can shop for clothes made by local designers.
