From the Praia da Oura in the east to the sprawling Praia do Peneco in the west, Albufeira is a beach lover’s dream. The Blue Flag beaches are deep and wide and there is no shortage of space to unwind and relax. The main beaches have plenty of loungers and parasols as well as cafes and restaurants. The soft white sand is perfect and the dramatic cliff faces lining the coast make for an impressive back drop. You can take your pick from exciting watersports along the coast and the impressive marina is worth a visit.

Top Tip:

Follow the promenade behind the Praia do Peneco west towards the marina. It’s a nice little walk and the area around the marina is great for drinks or a light lunch.

You can still enjoy the traditional flavours of the Algarve in most restaurants. Look out for bacalhau (salt cod), spicy piri-piri chicken and a huge range of shellfish and fresh fish. If your taste buds don’t stretch beyond traditional English favourites and fast food you will not starve. Albufeira offers food for all budgets and nationalities.

Shopping in Albufeira

While away a lazy afternoon exploring the cobbled streets and whitewashed buildings of the old town. There are lots of quaint little boutiques with leather goods a local speciality. You will find market stalls, souvenir shops and stores selling holiday essentials around every corner. Self-catering holidaymakers can take advantage of the large commercial centres on the outskirts of the resort towards Montechoro to stock up on essentials.

Top Tip:

Market lovers should try out the Quarteira Market. Held every Wednesday morning. It is about 50 minutes away on the local bus but is well worth a visit.

Things to see in Albufeira

The Algarve coast is very easy to explore with many interesting towns and villages within an hour or two. A hire car makes life very easy but the local bus service is also a convenient and reliable way to get around. Places to visit include Silves, Olhos de Agua, Paderne and Guia. The Roman influence can still be seen in these local parish towns. Further afield – a day trip to Lisbon is worth considering. For trips offshore – take a walk up to the marina and see what is on offer. There are regular fishing trips, diving and excursions to other ports along the coast.

Top Tip:

There are some great dolphin watching cruises that run from the marina. If you’re lucky you will get to see the local dolphins frolicking in their natural habitat.
