If you are thinking about holidays in the Algarve you should consider Lagos in Portugal. Lagos in the western Algarve is a great destination for family holidays, surfing holidays or relaxing beach or golfing holidays. The city is also a well known backpacker destination and has a great choice of accommodation ranging from hostels to top hotels and a mix of tourists from Europe, North America and Australia. A great destination for those young and old. It is full of historical interest with it's origins dating as far back as 2000 years BC when it was known as Lacobriga. Lagos has always had a seafaring connection, originally visited by Phoenicians and Carthaginians and then, during the 15th century, was the base for the 'voyages of the Discoveries' instigated by Henry the Navigator when trade between Africa and Portugal brought a great deal of wealth into the town..

The older part of Lagos is still circled by the city walls that were constructed during the 16th century when it was the residence of the governors of the Algarve and the fort, Ponta da Bandeira, by Batata beach is part of the 17th century fortifications that were added to protect the town.

Beautiful Beaches
Renowned for the golden rocks that made the Algarve famous, it is generally the beautiful beaches that constitute the major attraction and there are many to choose from. There is always space at the golden sands of Meia Praias to the east of the town, however the beaches which lie to the south are generally considered more picturesque. Over the years the cliffs here have eroded into gnarled stone arches and tunnels which separate many tiny coves, all blessed with clean blue waters and some with steps built into the cliffs. The most popular of these is the Praia Dona Ana. For those with personal transport, the whole coast around Lagos is worth a visit for less well-known beaches and small fishing villages.

From Beaches to Bars and Boat trips
Lagos is certainly full of history, but it is also a vibrant town with lots going on and something for everyone, from beaches, trendy marina bars and restaurants, to traditional shops and restaurants or why not try the popular and traditional activity for tourists - a tour to the caves in small fisherman boats, you can discover the insides of the caves guided by a Portuguese fisherman, or you can opt for a day on a sailing boat, where you can visit some deserted beaches, enjoy a nice barbecue and have some adventurous and unforgettable trips!

The centre of Lagos really isn't very big, but it can be a bit confusing! There are so many little streets criss-crossing that it is quite easy to lose your bearings, but to be honest, as long as you head down hill you are sure to get back to the centre! There are loads of bars that stay open until the early hours and in the summer time the centre of town is alive with people of all ages enjoying themselves. There are always touts from the different bars offering a free drink or 'shot' at 'their' bar, but it can be a useful way to find them as they are often tucked away down one of the many little side streets. Another popular area of Lagos is the Lagos Marina. The 450+ berth marina, which has both the Euromarina Anchor Award and the Blue Flag award, has a variety of shops, bars and restaurants to enjoy, all with a great view of the 'boats'!

From Sun to Seafood..
Eating out is part of the pleasure of a holiday on the Algarve, and Lagos offers the best of the best choices of establishments in which to indulge. Seafood lovers will be ecstatic, but no one, even vegetarians, will be disappointed or go hungry. When visiting the Algarve you must try the fish as it is so fresh. Portugal has many dishes unique to the country and they are all readily available in Lagos. Mullen’s is one of the oldest and most successful Lagos Portugal restaurants around. Fabulous traditional meals are available all year-round and live music nights featuring performance by local musicians.

Another of Lagos Portugal restaurants extremely popular with locals and tourists for dining is A Forja. Value for money defines this eatery that dishes out traditional, large-portion meals. Go early or be ready to wait in line for a table in high season and don’t forget to ask about the specials of the day! Open for over two decades O Joao is a quaint and traditional restaurant and a must try when enjoying Lagos tourism. The seafood paella is a favorite here full of juicy mussels. When in Lagos take advantage of the traditional restaurants and make the most of the vast array of tantalizing menus.

Relaxing lively little town

Food was great, people friendly. Mix of all different kinds of nationalities. Lots of nice restaurants to choose from both outdoors and in. Spending time down at the marina was enjoyable and everything is quite close together.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Quaint town that is yet to feel too touristy

I was initially quite worried about heading to Lagos on my own, but on getting there I found the people to be pleasant. There is a few hostels in the old town with had numerous english speaking europeans and americans. All the bar staff were easy to talk to and made for a relaxing night out. Plenty of bars/restaurants about serving food/beer at resonable price (€3 pint beer €2.50 bottle lager, €7 large salad, €9 filling meal) The streets around Lagos are very narrow and people laid back. It reminded me of some of the Cornish towns I travel to. I went to Lagos for the surfing and although the wind picked up throughout my stay, I wasn't disappointed, purchasing a 3 day surf lessons/safari. Adverts for boat trips / dolphin spotting / mountain biking and others were seen around the place making sure you'd unlikely get bored on a week or longer holiday.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Relaxed atmosphere, Short transfer to good surf beaches

Love Lagos, lovely food, lovely beaches and lovely people.

Lagos has everything, a variety of beaches our favourite would be Praia do Mos which is a lovely small beach with two lovely restaurants to choose from for food. Food fabulous and such good value especially if you like fish. The old town is charming with a wonderful selection of restaurants and bars. Nice shopping area also. Bus terminus giving you access to other nearby resorts. Lovely marina also.

The best thing about my stay was ...

The lovely people and the fab food.

beautiful town excellent restaurants superb location

Lagos is a more tranquil resort than some , around 1 hr from Faro by car . We used coast rd N125 ( no charges ) and found route quiet and easy driving .Town is beautifully located and offers the choice of simply enjoying Lagos marina , shops , beaches , restaurants ( especially their fresh fish ) , boat rides etc or driving a few miles to other local coastal villages/towns . There are several romantic restaurants , inc The Garden .

The best thing about my stay was ...

Very pretty town not too developed or spoiled . Friendly people .

This really is a great town to the west of the Algarve. The Old Town is like a maze of tiny streets each with its own delights of either shops, bars or restaurants. There is also an extremely picturesque marina which not only compliments the town but is also an extremely enjoyable place to visit in itself. Do some homework before you go and seek out some of the incredible restaurants. We were in heaven in each of the two we located. This is my favourite resort on the Algarve and I will look no further than here for my base in the future.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Casinha do Petisco restaurant on Rua da Oliveira. Traditional Portugeuse food and what an experience. Be prepared to queue up outside as they don't take bookings and it is small but you will be rewarded for doing so.

A home away from home

This is our eighth year at Lagos, sad as it may appear to some, we love the place. It has some great beaches, loads of restaurants, of which our favourite is the Chicken Piri Piri, just at the back of the main square, they have an excellent Tourist menu starting at 14 Euros, but you will come away stuffed - ask for Pedro. All the pavements in the town are set with small blocks of shiny stones, so watch what shoes you wear, especially if there has just been a shower. There is a great marina, where you can watch the world go by day or night, the English all seem to congregate either at the Oasis or Happy Jacks, both good drinking and eating places, where you will get a friendly welcome.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Friendly, welcoming, clean and not built up.

Not overly commercialised and very friendly.

True Portugal or close to it. Not Blackpool abroad, restaurants serving good traditional food and drinks at reasonable prices. English spoken by everyone we spoke to but try Portugese as they will appreciate the effort. Well worth the escape from the more frequented resorts.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Food, drinks, prices and the locals.

Top class

Beautiful spot. This is our second time back and won't be our last. Has all the advantages of some of the bigger spots such as Vilamoura and Albufeira but is much more friendly and certainly not as expensive

Fantastic Destination !!!

I love Lagos ! ...the old town itself is charming & not too developed with many great restaurants & bars which are not too expensive. If you have a car, explore the amazing unspoilt western algarve region with it's stunning blue flag beaches popular with surfers & also visit the many small traditional Portuguese whitewashed villages which have their own individual character. I can't wait to return ...hopefully soon !

The best thing about my stay was ...

Stunning scenery, fantastic food, relaxed atmosphere.
