Mahon
Mahon (or Mao) is the capital of Menorca, and tends to be a visitor's first view of Menorca as the ferry port is close and the airport is just 5km away. It is a quiet town full of georgian architecture that houses plenty of cafes and restaurants along the harbour, a good variety of shops, and local markets that offer a great selection of fresh fish and regional foods. There is some transport but it can be a little restricted so it's worthwhile hiring a car if you plan to do any excursions around the island. There are some lively bars of an evening but with limited opening times.
Who should go?
The town is a fairly quiet holiday resort that is best suited to older couples, or those looking for a peaceful holiday watching the world go by from the harbour.
alpharooms.com suggests
Gobierno Militar (the military governor's house) is well worth a visit - once a grand palace, it is now used by the spanish army. Alternatively take a day trip to visit Cales Coves, a vast complex of prehistoric caves that is best viewed from the sea.

Beautful city, fantastic harbour

A lovely place. Wander around the narrow streets, people watch in cafes and check out the views over the port. Interesting shops, great patisseries and check out the luxury yachts in the evening and dine in one of the many harbour restaurants: lovely atmosphere!

The best thing about my stay was ...

Relaxing, clean and picturesque

Mao

Good to explore, interesting to watch the huge cruise ships come into the port, many steps and steep inclines but you are rewarded by views of the port. Nice restaurants line the front, good for evening stroll. Gin factory a disappointment (basically a shop where you can sample free Gin). Lovely theatre, plenty of shops.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Views over the port, floating boat/restaurant.

Nice for a weekend break.

Typical Spanish town with windy streets, whitewashed buildings, bars and a harbour front.

The best thing about my stay was ...

Fifteen minutes from the airport
