Malmaison Edinburgh Overview

The Malmaison Hotel is located on the waterfront of the bohemian port of Leith. Princes Street and the historical city centre are just a five minute drive away and this stylish hotel is surrounded by a fine array of boutique shops and excellent restaurants. The hotel’s brasserie has recently been restored to its original atmospheric glory with an abundance of candle light and wrought ironwork, creating a romantic and seductive atmosphere. Best place in the world to drown your sorrows

So good that even Sevco splashed out on it to lose the Ramsdens cup. Only the best for Super Salary.

The best thing about my stay was...

Friendly staff after Jig dismantled the korby trouser press.

fabulous

The whole stay was a pleasure. I have stayed twice before and there was a welcoming card in the room hand written to me. Staff were courteous and very attentive and helpful. The breakfast was amazing the eggs benediction with smoked salmon was magnificent. There were little blue ceramic pots of yoghurt which were lovely over the fruit salad. There are many high quality eating establishments in the vicinity. Can't wait to return. Mary mcarthurx

Nice but breakfast not so great...

The hotel was nice with efficient check in, we had room 220 facing the front of the harbour. The breakfast service was not so great, some staff members had an attitude which left a lot to be desired. We waited 20-25 minutes for the breakfast we ordered, having to chase them up to receive it and the waffles I had we're so salty they were totally inedible and my partner had a cooked breakfast that tasted of salmon clearly because the scrambled eggs had been sitting on the salmon in the kitchen for some time. The staff forgot about my tea and also the couple we were with had the same service problems and they forgot to bring out one of their breakfasts, not a great end to a nice stay!

The best thing about my stay was...

Nice room.

A delight to stay here

I booked the Malmaison for my partners birthday. More recent reviews after booking were a little worrying to say the least!!! However we were not disappointed in any way. Lovely location by the water. Easy check-in. Our room on the third floor had a view of the castle. Room clean good size and with a bathroom to die for!! Breakfast was lovely, really well presented, fantastic dining room. There is a bus that runs into the centre every few minutes and a day travel card is £3.50. So easy as it was less than 10 minutes to Princess street.

Disappointed

This was the 3rd time that we have stayed in the hotel. It is now looking a bit tired and I was quite disappointed. Our room was ok but not certainly not luxurious and our bath was quite dirty with a lot of hairs in it.... In the room it said breakfast was till 11 but when I went down at 10.35 I was told it was finished although the cold buffet was still sitting out so I grabbed a pastry and orange juice. It used to be such a lovely hotel but it desperately needs some TLC, sad.

Enjoyable, would visit again.

Positives: The Room was spacious, extremely clean and well laid out. The bath was a lovely size to relax in. The customer service from reception was wonderful. We rang down for a continental breakfast one morning and enjoyed breakfast downstairs the next. The rooms were extremely quiet, you couldn't hear a mouse squeak, which was a plus as I am a really light sleeper! The hotel is situated in a beautiful area. Close to Edinburgh city centre, but out of the busyness, right on the port. There is a big shopping centre and ASDA very close too. Everything is right on your doorstep. :) Negatives: I handed over my debit card and authorised any future transactions should we use the mini bar (which we had no plans to!). Two days after checking out, I received a letter through the post to advise that my debit card had been debited £10 as I (apparently) had taken 2 bottles of beer from the mini bar. I assure you this was NOT the case. On the positive: Malmaison were happy to refund this when I rang them to complain. Breakfast...... Yucky!!! Don't order the soft boiled eggs. You'll get hard boiled!

The best thing about my stay was...

The area! Beautiful!

Overall good stay

Stayed here for my first week of work in Leith. Lovely looking hotel with very polite and helpful staff. My first room was lovely, but the shower was absolutely rubbish and definitely not the power shower I was promised. There was also an incredibly loud banging noise which woke me up a number of times continually during the night. I was later informed this was a water pipe issue. I complained and the next night the noise was gone... the following night it returned and I complained again and was told to pack my bags and I'd be upgraded to a better room in another area of the hotel. Second room was brilliant bar the incredibly squeaky corridor.... but i was happy they offered to upgrade me as a goodwill measure. Lovely hotel but if something isn't right don't hold back in making a complaint - staff incredibly helpful and keen to resolve the issue.

The best thing about my stay was...

The superior bathroom in my room upgrade.

One night stay

Room was clean, modern, spacious and well equipped. Staff were really friendly and helpful. £7 taxi fare to city centre but nice to be out of the city by the port. A nice selection of items on the continental breakfast and for a £2 supplement you can have both cooked and continental. Nice touches and attention to detail all over the place. You are invited to take all the toiletries home and my wife says they are really nice (I wouldn't know). Malmaisons are always top notch in our experience.

Excellent hotel

Very pleasant staff, lovely room with great shower and the most comfortable bed I have ever slept in (in a hotel). Lovely and plentiful continental breakfast, and dinner in the evening was excellent.

The best thing about my stay was...

Undoubtedly the bed!

Excellent hotel in a fantastic location

The Mal is a really good hotel which is well ran by excellent staff. Located in the heart of Leith close to many bars, restaurants and shops which caters for everyone. The rooms are very clean, modern and have the obligatory flat screen TV with many channels. Most rooms have views but if you are unfortunate you will get a room with a view of next doors wall. The bar and restaurant are first class with some plush furnishings and great service but are pretty expensive to drink/eat in(£4.10 a pint/ from £17.00 a steak etc). We had breakfast here and upgraded (£2.00 per person/day) which was well worth it as the breakfast menu is very good.Overall you must to stay here if you are stopping in Leith.

Good Location

Hotel hard to find. Try this post code EH6 7BZ, then keep on going until (if you're lucky) you manage to see 'Hotel Parking' painted on the floor to the entrance of the car park. Staff welcoming on arrival. Room clean and tidy. Good bed, shower. The room also has iron, ironing board enough hangers to get on with. Big TV and a DVD player also in the room. We paid for four nights with continental but paid an extra £2 each for a hot breakfast which was well worth it. Bed made and room cleaned everyday. Didn't have to ask for anything, but sure the hotel would have been helpful as they even changed a broken light bulb without us mentioning. Car park always had a space which helped when we drove back from a day out. Overall clean room and areas of the hotel, staff very helpful and friendly. My only suggestion would be some music/ T.V and an exercise mat for the gym. Catching a bus into Edinburgh was very easy, just remember to pack some change as the bus will only accept exact fare. Hotel very kind and changed some money for us. If you get chance plan the Edinburgh Museum in to your stay which is free and good to spend THE WHOLE DAY in. OCEAN TERMINAL shopping centre also worth a mention for shopping and eating which is a short walk away.

The best thing about my stay was...

Easy to get to Edinburgh centre on bus and the Ocean Terminal Shopping Centre

Friendly but Pricey

Arrived to a very warm welcome and to a beautiful clean room. We decided to eat in the hotel restaurant and although the hotel is classed as child friendly there was no childrens menu or offer of a half portion for my 10 year old. Service was slow and 1 glass of decent wine cost £10!!!! The meal for 2 of us came to £75 which I felt was extremely pricey as the food was nice but not exciting - would definitely eat outwith hotel next time. We were woken at 5am but the fire alarm (technical fault) and although we had an apology had no offer of discount or free breakfast which I thought was normal policy in hotels if guests were disturbed through the night. Breakfast was lovely and again the friendliness of the staff was great Would I stay again - maybe not - hotel is a little tired and the offer of a DVD library whcih they used to have is no more - much to the disappointment of my daughter!
