10/10 Amazing

01 March 2015

Very good but don't let the reviews / trip advisor rating set unrealistic expectations

Got back to the wet and windy uk this morning following 7 nights at the RAM. We travelled with another couple (all early thirties) and booked based on the good price and excellent reviews. Based on my experience I can say that the reviews that I read beforehand on the whole were right for both pro's and cons. Pro's: It's Big - lot of variety, you can spend each day at a different pool / area and each night at a different restaurant / bar. Staff - friendliest I've come across at any hotel ever. Literally can't do enough for you (to the point that the ones that only smiled whilst serving almost seemed rude - though they weren't, just in comparison to those who went above and beyond) Food - food was plentiful and varied... Yes there are lots of vaguely similar meat dishes but there's only so many ways you can cook chicken / beef!!! The tagine with fresh beef kofta's and spit roast chickens was probably our favourite but that didn't stop us sampling all of the other restaurants every night. Also worth a mention that they have a 'carving station' with a nightly special - the beef Wellington was awesome! Coffee - like others have said, it would go toe to toe with any high street chain over here and was visited a minimum of 2 times a day by us! Doughnuts - I know I already covered food but these bad boys require their own mention... I'd spent 8 weeks vigorously training and dieting for this holiday, used the gym and swam daily while I was there and tried to eat as healthy as possible (within reaosn) but the doughnuts ruined me. By the end of the holiday I was having 3 in a sitting... These alone are worth picking this hotel for! Jetty - it is essentially a pier taking about 15 - 20 mins to walk to the end and back, great for a stroll and snorkelling at the end (weather permitting - we only had 2 days where the sea was calm enough!) Rooms - we asked for refurbished but got an old one but it was still big, clean and finished to a high standard so we decided no need to ask for a room change. Not what I go on holiday for but worth mentioning that the big flatscreen TVs in the rooms have 4-5 channels showing English films and channel 47 had the premier league games which were perfect for a bit of chill out time between the pool and dinner. Table service- hardly went to the bar as there were always waiters around with a smile bringing you more of the same (most of the time without you even having to ask). I know it's not everyone's thing but a few small tips go a long way (literally a couple of pounds / dollars / euros) and will ensure you don't go thirsty all day / night. On this point, there wasn't one occassion where I felt obliged to tip and most of the time is have to call them back to give them the tip so it was far from expected and always decieved very gratefully! Another benefit to minimal bar time was that the lack of understanding of queuing etiquette / manners from those from a country that will remain unnamed became far less of an issue and the few times it did crop up the staff handled it perfectly setting them straight on how queuing actually works and directing them to the back of the line. Cleanliness - they are working 24/7 to keep this place spotless which it was for the entire time we were there! Gym- a decent enough gym for a hotel with enough cardio and weight machines (as well as some free weights) for a pretty decent work out. It's in the spa where I also had a back massage which was great. Cons: Evening animation / entertainment- not really my thing so not passing judgement but went to watch the 'comedy show' one evening and though it was pretty poor. That being said, the karaoke in the Irish bar was probably the best night we had! Drinks - some good, some bad... Piña colada (ask for it with dark rum), Havanah and Albertros cocktails were all very good and beer was fine (similar to some of the less desirable beers from home like carlsberg or carling), these were all fine to drink day and night but seemed quite weak in terms of alcohol content (not always a bad thing in the hangover stakes)... Some of the cocktails were not so good but nothing too much to complain about here. Vacant area in the middle of the grounds - currently used as an area to repair broken sun loungers. Not the end of the world but a bit of an eye sore in passing! Spa / water sport / excursion guys - get a red flag from reception as altough they'll back off with a firm no it's just much easier not to be pestered in the first place! All in all a great holiday and a hotel I would definately return to and recomend for both families and couples - we've already bored friends and family with stories today and I can see why so many people return!
