6/10 Good

Location, Location

In short the only good thing about this hotel is the location. Right next to Temple bar within walking distance of everything! Hotel itself was pretty old and in need of a good refurb! It wasn't dirty but wasnt great - I would only recommend this hotel if you are spending minimal time here and are want to be near everything Little things were the main problem - Hotel rooms keys stopped working all the time, breakfast bar was poor etc etc If you can get it cheaply then go for it!

Great Location Nice Hotel

I stayed here for a short city break. The hot is lively but we requested a quiet room so that is what we got.The rooms are very clean and I particularly liked the fact that there were duvets on the beds. I would go back again. it was a good place to stay as it was very central.

Review of 'THE CENTRAL'

The Central Best Western (privately owned) is a decent, value-for-money 3-star hotel situated as its name suggests in the middle of Dublin, on Exchequer Street and between Temple Bar and the city's main shopping street, Grafton Street. It's an honest, hard-working, solid Victorian affair, purpose-built with a warm, welcoming (if mildly chintzy) lobby and good, generous proportions.

Reception is always courteous, mostly friendly and roundly competent, depending on who's on duty. Wayne and Jimmy, the two concierges, are particularly helpful and accommodating, especially when it comes to food and drink. Clef d'Or they are not (whaddya want for 3*?), but they do have contacts.

I was allocated a room on the 4th (top) floor which was clean and had everything that was promised, but it was a little small and in the eaves of the roof, with no water pressure and a quite loud fan buzzing somewhere outside. There was also a long brass pole on the bed, which was not objectionable, merely amusing. The lady on reception gladly upgraded me for no extra charge to a good-sized triple room with a bath on the third floor overlooking Exchequer Street, which was much more satisfactory. The bathroom had a heated towel rail (more than can be said for the Euro180 pppn Gresham Hotel), although acquiring shaving gel was problematic and using it made shaving with water attractive. Being picky, the television was very small with a non-working radio function and the lighting was quite low-level. As an aside, take the stairs. I say this mainly because it was a nice staircase but also because, while I'm sure it was safe, the lift was not for the nervous traveller!

BUSINESS TRAVELLERS: There were no powerpoints at the dressing table in my room, although the staff were perfectly happy to provide an extension lead for the duration of my stay. Also, there was only a normal 'phone line, so dial-up modem access is at hotel 'phone rates. The 'phone socket was also on the other side of the room.

Breakfast was quite DIY, with average quality food on offer. Obviously, the scrambled egg and sausages hovered somewhere around service station quality, but the bacon and beans were good! They served good tea and toast, and the staff was quite pleasant. As for other meals, I didn't eat in the 'guest restaurant' (how delightfully Edwardian!), but do try The Library Bar, serving good drinks to residents and non- until around 11pm.
